Dear All,

This comes from the newsroom at the national Catholic youth events in Adelaide – the Australian Catholic Youth Ministry Convention and meeting of youth ministry coordinators...More to share in the next newsletter.

Earlier in the holidays, the YCS held a state camp in Port Pirie with students from the Adelaide and Port Pirie dioceses. See below for report and some photos.

This week is Anti-Poverty Week, a chance to learn about the issues of poverty in our world and the needs for change. As Catholics, we are called to address these needs in ourselves and our communities, and to advocate for changes in the institutions of society. We live in a world where there is enough for everyone, but it is not evenly distributed. As Jesus looked at the women contirbuting to the temple fund, he said: “For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." I am reminded of this whenever I see young people be so generous towards charities such as Caritas, even with their limited means.

See below also for the Catholic Bishops' Social Justice statement on sport in Australia, an opportunity for volunteering at Taize in France and a very clever video created by a church in California.

In Peace,

Bib Verse Like
“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.” Deuteronomy 10:17

I really like the song 'Awesome God'. God is so good and he makes me happy.

YCS Camp
Members of the YCS groups of Adelaide and Port Pirie met at St Mark's boarding school for 3 days of reviewing, learning, sharing, praying and having fun! They reviewed the national campaign, Mental Health, and came up with actions that were based on good understanding and faith. The students also strengthened their relationships across the state and discussed ways of promoting YCS among their schools and friendship groups.

2014 Anti-Poverty Week: 12 to 18 October 2014
Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million Australians. Around the world, more than a billion people are desperately poor.

The main aims of Anti-Poverty Week are to:

  • strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia
  • encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments
  • everyone is encouraged to help reduce poverty and hardship by organising an activity during the Week or taking part in an activity organised by others.

Taize
Taizé Volunteering 2015 – for 18-28 year olds

Background Notes for Nominees

SA Council of Churches wishes to offer funding of up to $1,000 towards the costs of two young people travelling from Australia to Taizé, France, as Volunteers in 2015. All nominations will be considered by representatives of SACC Executive Committee.  If your visit to Taizé is dependent on SACC sponsorship, we recommend that you make preliminary enquiries only with Taizé (see para 2), rather than a firm arrangement, until we can let you know if your nomination for funding is successful and the amount to be allocated.

Volunteering in Taizé: Extracts from Taizé website

“The brothers of the community, together with the sisters of the other communities who live in Taizé, would be unable on their own to welcome the large numbers who come throughout the year. The presence of a group of volunteers makes the international meetings possible.

The volunteers in Taizé, young people between the ages of 18 and 28, share the various practical tasks in running the youth meetings. However, staying as a volunteer is first of all a chance to think about the next step in life through reflection, regular community prayer and sharing with others.

At any one time there are about 40 young men and women staying for a few months or a year. They are not only from Europe, but also from Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Oceania. In addition, between Spring and Autumn [northern hemisphere!] there are some young people staying for a few weeks.
