The Good Samaritan Sisters-125 Years in the Diocese
Celebrating 125 years of Good Samaritan presence and Catholic education in Port Pirie
Sixteen Sisters of the Good Samaritan, many past pupils, teachers and friends, gathered in Port Pirie on 22nd and 23rd May to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the arrival of the first Good Samaritans to Port Pirie in 1890. Within days the first Catholic schools, primary and secondary, were opened and after many developments over the years they grew into what is today known as St Mark’s College.
The reflections below were given at three different gatherings on Saturday 23rd May – the actual date of the blessing and opening of the old convent at 105 Gertrude Street – now known as the Chancery and the Catholic Education Office.
